Travelling together for the first 8 weeks is Mac, Connie and Scott. Thereafter and for the remaining 4 months is Mac and Scott in ‘The Mog’.
Welcome to our adventure!
Those of you that have no idea what you’ve stumbled upon – allow me…
Somewhere way back in the beginning of 2017 Mac, Scott and I began talking about how cool it would be to do an overland trip through Africa together this winter. Well, the ‘how cool would it be’ sentence didn’t get thrown around for too long. It very quickly became a quest to find a suitable vehicle and start planning a route.
After several imminent flights to Holland, Germany and Belgium to source a vehicle. We found ourselves looking google eyed at each other, with that warm fuzzy feeling inside most people get when looking into the eyes of their new born infant.
Our new born infant was in the shape of a 9.5 tonne Mercedes Unimog U400 and boyyyyyyyyyy was she magnificent!!
She had previously been converted into a liveable, fully self-sustainable unit but she did need a bit of love…
Over the following few months her plumbing system was reconstructed, the electrics rewired. She was also treated to a new 650L water tank and new 4No. 220Ah leisure batteries. The storage compartment and the seating area inside the cabin were rebuilt and she was fitted with a steel hydraulic box which carries a 450cc Yamaha Grizzly ATV and a CRF 250L Honda dual sport motorbike. She now has a fully loaded weight of 12.5 tonne.
Evenings during the rebuild included researching routes and destinations, studying maps, more research, more maps. The evening paperwork side to the trip could not have been possible without Helen, countless hours went into research, visa applications, carnet de passage and insurance. Huge shout out to mom! The route took a while to determine due to closed boarders, conflict and the occasional kidnapping in Nigeria, Mali and parts of Mauritania…
The provisional route is to float into Morocco via the Gibraltar Strait, head East towards the Atlas Mountains and play in the peaks for a while. Marrakesh will bring us West, then turning South to take on The Sahara. Crossing into Mauritania, more Sahara, continuing South into Senegal and The Gambia. Christmas and New Year will be spent here with our Kololi family like it has been almost every year since Hanna, Scott and I were little kids. The Gambia will bring a well-deserved rest and plenty of Julbrew!
That will be the end of this trip for me but Mac and Scott will continue South back through Senegal, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Ivory Coast before taking a turn North and heading home via Mali, Mauritania and Morocco.
Keep checking in for updates on our route, blog posts and footage.
